Cal completed his Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the interdepartmental area of Educational Studies with a specialization in Leadership and Higher Education. His dissertation topic was "The Presence of Principal Transformational Leadership in the Province of Alberta, Canada-Teacher Perceptions." He completed a Master of Arts degree in Administration and Curriculum at Gonzaga University and holds a diploma in curriculum from the University of Calgary. His Bachelor of Education degree was completed at the University of Lethbridge, where he also completed a diploma with a focus on libraries.
Cal's research publications and presentations have been in the areas of cooperative learning, computer technology, effective principal leadership, peer support and professional development through collaborative autobiography, finance of post-secondary education, transformational leadership and mixed methodologies. He has taught at all levels of the K-12 system, as well as at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
